About Jan Rooney
Jan, originally from the Midlands, moved to Scotland in 2002 to study at the prestigious Glasgow School of Art and Design. Jan successfully attained a First class BA Hons degree, specialising in Silversmithing and Jewellery. In her 3rd year she had the opportunity to study at the Hiko Mizuno College of Jewellery in Japan for 6 months.
Studying in Japan inspired Jan’s style and unique approach to her designs and the materials she works with. Her inspiration has continued to evolve with subsequent travels and you will see subtle flavours of Morocco, India, and Mexico, just to name a few of the countries she has visited, visible in her work.
Jan’s exploration of the different cultures, architectural shapes, textures of materials and techniques are all central to her designs and creations. She essentially absorbs her surroundings and then develops and creates beautiful designs that evoke memories through their association, form, shape, colour and texture.
Jan is naturally drawn to creating pieces that are inspired by flowers, due to her other great passion of floristry.
Jan has been involved in floristry since she was fifteen and has continued to design and create in that arena also.
By combining and exploring materials and working in a variety of scales, Jan develops her designs for bespoke commissions but she also has the agility to be successful in the commercial market too.
